2011 Sand & Flower Festa in Satsuma

May 8, 2011

Golden Week just ended here in Japan, and we made good use of it.  We hiked up Kaimondake, the perfect cone-shaped dormant volcano on the southern tip of the western peninsula of Kagoshima.  Didn’t really get any good pictures from that day because we were in clouds the whole time.

We also hit up the sand baths in Ibusuki and camped out next to the beach.  The next morning, we went to Healthy Land, a spa with an outdoor bath with an incredible view of Kaimondake.

We looped up around the coast on the Japan Sea side and checked out the sand sculpture festival in Minamisatsuma-shi.  We went on a Monday, which was right in between national holidays, so crowds were not bad and we didn’t have to wait in traffic like last year.   This year’s theme was Travels Around the World (last year’s was World Heritage).  Here are some pictures of this year’s event.
